Tuamotu Islands
Eons ago, underwater volcanic action in the Pacific created lava flows that eventually reached the surface of the ocean to become lush tropical islands. Other islands gradually sank, leaving huge lagoons surrounded by coral barrier reefs called atolls such as Tikehau, Rangiroa and Manihi. Each Tuamotus is a tiny paradise, as if almost one hundred pearl necklaces were gracefully tossed upon the ocean. Each island is a delicate band of palm laden coral beaches and motu’s surrounding a lagoon with water so clear, it can only be described as infinite. These oceanic wonders are dotted with villages where simple Polynesian life welcomes romantics and divers alike.
Tikehau is called the Ring of Pearls in a graceful oval of white and pink sand beaches creating a picture postcard world. This island is located a few miles west of Rangiroa. Its fish filled lagoon allows many of the island’s residents to live solely off fishing. Most of the residents live in the main town of Tuharaher, where there are fruit trees everywhere. The real draw here is the beaches and the incredible snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities. Our favorite resort is the Tikehau Pearl Beach Resort.
Manihi is a small atoll located north of Rangiroa. This spectacular island is home to the Black pearl farms of Tahiti. You can visit the farm to see how the pearls are harvested. There is just one resort on the atoll, providing a perfect opportunity to enjoy a relaxed vacation with an introduction to the local people. The natives don’t even live on this island but you can visit their village by a short boat ride across the lagoon. Our favorite resort is the Manihi Pearl Beach Resort.
Rangiroa is the island of the Long Sky. It is a string of coral encircling a luminous turquoise and jade-green lagoon. Over 200 motu’s surround countless species of marine life living in one of the worlds greatest diving destinations. Our favorite resorts are Novotel Rangiroa Lagoon Resort and the Hotel Kia Ora. Many of our clients like to experience the Kia Ora Sauvage with its white sand beaches and no electrical lighting.
